plus bird pizza review, secret coffee and chances to win pga ticket

¡THE QC LOCAL!

Charlotte’s a busy place. Here’s the best of it.

🎢 Last Sunday, as my Dad and I were cooking Shrimp and Grits for Mother’s Day (which were unbelievable, btw), he dropped some substantial news.

“Hey bud, I ordered Bird Pizza for this Thursday for us to try.”

As I hadn’t gotten around to going yet, mostly due to the inconvenience of pre-ordering, I was naturally pretty fired up. So, yesterday I ventured over to 15th street and picked up our two pies. Our fam didn’t go to far outside of the box, with one classic cheese and one classic pepperoni, but both were damn good. I imagine if you sit at the tables they have outside the window and eat it hot, it’s probably next level.

  • Classic Cheese: 8.0/10

  • Pepperoni: 8.4/10

I’ve got to get it fresh out of the oven to determine if Bird is better than Pizza Baby, or the magical slices at PIE.ZAA, but it definitely supports the fact that there is good pizza in CLT!

P.S. - My friends Lily, Jackson, and Annika landed a reservation at the actual restaurant and said it was unbelievable. From the pictures, the Caesar salad has so much cheese that it could be mistaken for a coconut cake.

  • All the breakfast burrito recommendations after last week’s edition. Multiple people have mentioned that Salud Cerveceria may have the best one in town. I haven’t made it out to NoDa yet to try it, but I’ll get there soon. Once I feel like I’ve tried enough, I’ll make a comprehensive list.

  • In honor of the PGA Championship, we decided that an 18-hole putt-putt championship would be appropriate. Although I’d only heard myths, our group is venturing out to Frankie’s tonight to take advantage of their $10 putt-putt. I haven’t done putt-putt in a couple of years, so why not.

PGA 🤝The People

‼️Late last week, I got some thrilling information: that my roommate had a spare ticket for Saturday of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow that has been going on for the duration of this week. While the weather originally called for rain all weekend, it looks like whoever controls that has allowed the people of Charlotte a sunny golf weekend. I imagine the guys will break out the most impressive country club polo that they have, accompanied by lots of LoveShackFancy dresses from the ladies this weekend, as we’re looking at 85 and humid for the majority of the weekend.

If you’re going to the tournament, you’ve likely heard that the beer/alcohol prices have significantly increased since the last time that Quail Hollow held the PGA, with a 25oz Michelob Ultra retailing at $17.50.

However, the real news of the tournament is inclusion of free sandwiches, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages with your ticket. I guess if you’ve paid hefty fees to go, you can definitely try to get your ROI on food and N/A drinks. The one downside is that the trademark Quail Hollow Lemonade that some people come exclusively for, doesn’t look like it will be making an appearance this year. Brutal, but that’s the price you pay for free breakfast sandwiches and burgers.

For those saying Quail doesn’t have character, stick those thoughts where the sun doesn’t shine.

UNDERRATED IN THE 704

Yesterday, a friend of mine on my team at work came equipped with a freshly purchased drink from “Killer Coffee,” which had me genuinely stumped, as I’d never heard of it.

Turns out, in the back of the neighborhood brewery, Resident Culture, they serve really good coffee, which they brand as “Killer Coffee,” just to throw everyone off. I was also unaware that RC serves breakfast, and supposedly has a great breakfast burrito, which I will most certainly be trying this weekend.

If you live in South End, definitely check out Killer Coffee in the back of Resident Culture, which is super walkable from most spots in Southend!
